Westin Hotel & Residence, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Today, Brunei Methanol Company Sendirian Berhad (BMC), participated in the 11th IMPCA Asian Methanol Conference held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the Westin Hotel & Residence. The annual event is sponsored by the International Methanol Producers and Consumers Association (IMPCA) based in Brussels. The IMPCA is an international association of companies who are active in the global methanol market.

This year’s conference is co-organised by Methanol Market Services Asia (MMSA) and Jim Jordan and Associates (JJ&A). MMSA is a management consulting organisation based in Singapore, specializing in global methanol, its derivatives market as well as technical analysis. JJ&A is a US-based consultancy and a leading market analyst and intelligence provider to the Transportation Fuels, Biodiesel, Ethanol, and Methanol industries worldwide.

The annual Asian Methanol Conference brings together experts from around the world to provide state-of–the-art views on key industry issues in a forum which promotes networking and learning. The theme for this year’s conference is "Methanol for Fuels & Chemical Feedstocks - "Will Asia Succeed Where The US Hasn't?"

The forum this year, being the best attended ever, involves speakers from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, India, Europe and North America. The conference this year focuses on the critical issues impacting Asian methanol markets, particularly the potential for the industry to become a viable fuel supplier to energy-hungry China. This is the first time that BMC is participating in an international conference for the global methanol industry, ever since its incorporation in March 2006. The Conference provides the opportunity for BMC to introduce itself and also bring Brunei Darussalam to attention of the global methanol industry community.

BMC is a Brunei Darussalam registered international joint venture company incorporated with the objective to construct, own and operate Brunei Darussalam’s first world class methanol production plant. BMC’s methanol plant is currently being constructed in within the Sungai Liang Industrial Park area.

Speaking at the Conference is Mohammad Reduan bin Hj Mohd Yusof, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of BMC. Mr. Kinya Tsuji, BMC’s Chief Executive Officer also attended the Conference. In his presentation, entitled “A New Industry for Brunei”, Mohammad Reduan first highlighted the background events leading up to the establishment of BMC in Brunei Darussalam.

According to Mohammad Reduan, the BMC methanol plant, which is currently under construction, is scheduled for completion by end of 2009 followed by commissioning and commercial operation by the start of second quarter of 2010. Mohammad Reduan also stated that the methanol plant complex is Brunei Darussalam’s first world class industrial plant project, since the coquntry’s independence. BMC is the flagship for this new pioneer industry in Brunei Darussalam and that the eventual operation of the methanol plant complex at the Sungai Liang area will put Brunei Darussalam in the global map of methanol producing and exporting countries.

Once operational, the methanol plant will create job opportunities (currently 99% of BMC total employees are Bruneians); business opportunities for local SMEs; as well as provide opportunities for new spin-off industry.

After more than three decades from the start of a natural gas liquefaction plant in the country, Brunei Darussalam soon will once again witness the birth of a major industry plant complex. This time a natural gas chemical plant producing methanol, a commodity chemical used for the production of numerous household products, industrial material components, as well as construction materials worldwide.
